Homework and Independent Study

HOMEWORK, MAKE-UP WORK, AND PLANNED ABSENCES

Most Lindero Canyon Middle School teachers use Google Classroom to post assignments, class materials, and announcements. Students are encouraged to check Google Classroom regularly, particularly when absent from school.

Students are responsible for making up work missed due to an excused absence. The make-up period shall be no less than the length of the absence plus one school day. Students should communicate directly with their teachers regarding any missed assignments, quizzes, tests, or classroom activities.

Teachers are not obligated to provide make-up work for unexcused or truant absences, and make-up work may not be permitted for days missed due to suspension.

PLANNED ABSENCES AND TRAVEL

If a non-school-related trip during the school year is unavoidable, parents/guardians should notify the Attendance Office as far in advance as possible. Students should communicate with their teachers prior to the absence regarding missed instruction and assignments.

Please note that family trips and vacations are considered unexcused absences under California Education Code. It is at the teacher's discretion whether work may be completed or accepted for credit during an unexcused absence.

SHORT-TERM INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students who will be absent for an extended period up to 15 school days may be eligible for Short-Term Independent Study. Participation must be arranged in advance and is subject to district guidelines. 

Parents/guardians requesting Short-Term Independent Study should submit a written request to the Counseling Secretary/Registrar at least two weeks prior to the planned absence. Requests should include the student's name, dates of absence, destination, and parent/guardian contact information.

Once approved, an Independent Study agreement will be sent electronically through Aeries for administrative, parent and student signatures. Teachers will be notified of the agreement.

Students participating in Independent Study are expected to check Google Classroom daily and complete assigned coursework daily while away. Prior to departure, students should communicate directly with their teachers regarding assignments, assessments, and course expectations.
